Counterfeit Samsung devices inundate the marketplace; Delhi Police dismantle a large-scale forgery operation
Consumers are being cautioned by the Delhi Police to exercise vigilance when acquiring smartphones, especially premium devices presented at exceptionally reduced prices. The Delhi Police have successfully disrupted a substantial illicit operation involving the unauthorized assembly and sale of counterfeit Samsung Galaxy devices within the city. A recent enforcement action in the Karol Bagh district led to the apprehension of four individuals and the recovery of more than 500 fraudulent Galaxy smartphones, in addition to the tools and electronic components utilized in their manufacture. Whereas authentic Samsung Galaxy flagship devices typically command prices exceeding ₹1 lakh in India, the counterfeit imitations were being marketed for approximately ₹35,000 to ₹40,000. Law enforcement officials indicated that this fraudulent scheme operated discreetly, preying on purchasers seeking premium smartphones at unusually low price points. The fabricated devices were misrepresented as genuine high-end Samsung Galaxy models, encompassing Ultra variants and even foldable designs.
The creation of counterfeit Galaxy handsets involved a multi-step scheme. The perpetrators acquired essential internal parts, including circuit boards, camera assemblies, power sources, and chassis, from international vendors, predominantly in China. These components were then put together domestically, frequently combined with recycled or off-brand elements, to produce devices that mimicked the look of authentic Samsung products. To conceal their fraudulent origin, the syndicate applied counterfeit IMEI labels stating “Made in Vietnam.” This tactic aimed to deceive consumers and circumvent rudimentary network validations, creating the illusion of legitimate imported merchandise.
Marketed with prices that were suspiciously cheap.
While authentic Samsung Galaxy flagship models typically command prices exceeding ₹1 lakh in India, the imitations were being hawked for roughly ₹35,000 to ₹40,000. The dramatic price cut made these offers enticing to unsuspecting purchasers, many of whom were under the impression they were buying legitimate phones at reduced prices.
Law enforcement officials report that this pricing approach was a crucial factor in luring customers, especially individuals who were not adept at recognizing counterfeit electronics.
Confiscations and Apprehensions
In the course of the operation, law enforcement officials seized 512 counterfeit Samsung Galaxy mobile devices, in addition to a substantial quantity of individual parts, packaging supplies, decals, and implements necessary for their construction. Four individuals were taken into custody at the scene, and investigations are continuing to map out the broader network of suppliers and potential distribution routes extending to other urban areas.
Officials believe that comparable imitation handsets might already be available for purchase through unofficial retail outlets and online advertisements.
Subsequent to a recent enforcement action, the Delhi Police have disseminated a warning to consumers. They implore individuals to maintain a heightened level of caution when procuring smartphones, with a particular emphasis on premium models presented at uncharacteristically reduced prices. Purchasers are counselled to exclusively acquire devices from authorized dealerships, to validate IMEI numbers through official conduits, and to abstain from engaging with propositions that appear excessively beneficial. The investigative process remains in progress, with law enforcement personnel endeavoring to ascertain the provenance of the constituent elements and to ascertain the presence of analogous counterfeit enterprises operating within the country.
