Dr. Abhishek Pilani, a dermatologist and hair restoration specialist, explains to HT ShopNow that “Overdoing hairstyling manifests on your scalp as thinning, a lack of body, or a rise in hair shedding, frequently stemming from months of undetected damage at the root of the hair follicle.” He points out that the common perception is that hair loss occurs abruptly, when in fact, the hair roots have typically been under duress for an extended period.

Appliances that generate heat, like flat irons, curling wands, and hairdryers, expose hair to temperatures far beyond its natural tolerance. Dr. Pilani explains, ‘Although hair might appear sleek after styling, the constant exposure to heat inflames the skin surrounding each follicle. Over time, this diminishes the follicle’s capacity to hold onto the hair securely.’ He also points out that this gradual weakening, occurring with every styling session, is the reason many individuals notice ‘unexpected hair loss,’ even though the underlying issue has been developing slowly.

“Procedures like coloring, bleaching, straightening, and keratin treatments fundamentally alter the hair’s internal structure. However, they also compromise the scalp’s protective layer,” explains Dr. Pilani.
He points out that the skin beneath the surface becomes irritated and more susceptible to damage. When these chemical processes are performed too frequently, the scalp doesn’t have adequate time to heal, leading to diminished hair thickness and slower new growth. Dr. Pilani believes this is why many individuals notice thinning after regular salon visits.

Dr. Pilani highlights that hairstyle choices significantly influence the health of hair roots. According to him, “Constantly pulling hair into tight ponytails, buns, braids, and extensions puts repetitive stress on the same areas. This constant tension is particularly damaging to the temples and the hairline, causing hair follicles to constrict and produce finer strands.”
Product Residue and Blocked Follicles
Dr. Pilani notes that products such as serums, sprays, dry shampoos, and styling aids present an additional challenge. They can build up on the scalp and trap impurities and perspiration if not thoroughly cleansed. “Over time, this accumulation obstructs the openings of the hair follicles, hindering the growth of robust new hair and resulting in limp, lifeless locks,” he states.
Rebuilding Root Strength
Dr. Pilani suggests that most damage caused by styling can be reversed with consistent scalp care. “Once a week, cleanse your scalp with a mild exfoliating shampoo to eliminate product buildup and allow follicles to function optimally. This will gradually enhance both hair growth and density,” he asserts.
He further emphasizes the importance of fortifying the follicles with specific beneficial ingredients. “Peptides, niacinamide, caffeine, and biotin contribute to improved blood flow and nourish the hair roots. While their effects are gradual, their long-term benefits for hair thickness and preventing breakage are substantial,” he remarks.
Professional Interventions Offer Support
According to Dr. Pilani, “Certain dermatological treatments can expedite recovery if your hair appears thinner and requires more intensive interventions.” He mentioned professional therapies such as PRP therapy, which delivers growth factors to stimulate weakened follicles. Low-level laser therapy enhances cellular activity and promotes more vigorous regrowth. Hydration and oxygenation treatments reduce inflammation and restore the scalp’s natural environment. He notes that these procedures are most effective when integrated with a consistent at-home regimen.
Embracing Softer Styling Practices
“In addition to treatments, lifestyle modifications are crucial,” he contends. Using lower heat settings, allowing hair to air dry occasionally, spacing out chemical treatments, and avoiding overly tight hairstyles provide the necessary respite for hair follicles. He also advises using heat-protectant sprays and bond-repairing masks to shield the roots from external damage.
The Key Message: Prioritize Scalp Health, Then Styling
Ultimately, strong hair originates from a healthy scalp. While styling can remain a form of personal expression, it is most beneficial when combined with mindful care.
