Two police officers perish in Moscow blast, following the recent death of a Russian general
Russian state television broadcast footage of the location cordoned off, with a significant police contingent present. Local witnesses indicated the blast happened around 1:30 AM. The nation’s primary investigative body confirmed that an explosion in Moscow on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of two police officers and one civilian. Authorities had previously stated the detonation occurred near the site where Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, a high-ranking Russian general, lost his life on Monday. A crane was seen lifting a vehicle onto a transport at the location where Lt. Gen. Sarvarov was killed by an explosive planted beneath his car in Moscow, according to an AP report. Images on Russian TV depicted the area under lockdown with a strong police presence. Reports from witnesses suggest the explosion took place at approximately 1:30 AM local time. The BBC reported that the two police officers succumbed to their wounds later, as did a bystander. The Investigative Committee stated that two traffic police officers observed a “suspicious individual” close to a police vehicle on Yeletskaya Street. The report details that an explosive device detonated as they approached to apprehend the suspect. This event follows the death of Russian General Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov in an explosion just two days prior.
A high-ranking Russian military official, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, who led the operational training division of the Russian General Staff, succumbed to wounds sustained in a vehicle bombing on Monday. Russia’s Investigative Committee, its primary criminal investigation body, stated through its spokesperson, Svetlana Petrenko, that investigators are exploring multiple avenues in their probe into the assassination. One significant line of inquiry suggests the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence agencies in orchestrating the attack. Sarvarov’s career, as detailed on the defense ministry’s site, included service in the Russian military’s operations in the North Caucasus, notably Chechnya, during the 1990s, and he was also involved in overseeing Russian deployments in Syria between 2015 and 2016.
Moscow has pointed the finger at Kyiv, asserting that Ukraine is responsible for a number of significant assaults targeting prominent Russian individuals since the commencement of the invasion nearly four years ago. Confronted by a more substantial and better-resourced Russian military, Ukraine has frequently attempted to shift the trajectory of the conflict through unconventional maneuvers. For instance, in August of the previous year, Ukrainian forces launched an unannounced raid into Russia’s Kursk region, occurring at a time when they were contending with Russian advances elsewhere on the front. Although Russian soldiers eventually repelled the incursion, the action served to redirect Moscow’s military assets and bolster Ukrainian spirits, according to AP. Concurrently, Western authorities have leveled accusations against Russia, claiming it has engaged in activities beyond the direct combat zones. These allegations suggest Russia has orchestrated numerous acts of disruption and sabotage throughout Europe with the aim of diminishing support for Ukraine, claims that Moscow has denied.
