The MAGA base is experiencing a period of intense internal conflict
The pressure on the MAGA movement has been mounting for a considerable period, with the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the Trump administration’s management of the Epstein documents serving as significant catalysts.
For those not constantly immersed in online discourse, keeping up with the internal conflicts at AmericaFest would have been a challenge. This annual December conference in Phoenix, organized by Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization founded by Charlie Kirk, became a stage for the movement’s prominent figures to engage in public disagreements. The disputes revolved around issues such as the stance on Israel, the decision to provide platforms for individuals with antisemitic and conspiratorial views, the specific circumstances surrounding Kirk’s murder on a Utah college campus, and differing interpretations of American identity. The overall atmosphere, just three months after Kirk’s death, was characterized by disunity.
The strain on the MAGA movement has been intensifying for months, exacerbated by Kirk’s murder and the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein files. While these disagreements might appear as minor squabbles among a MAGA media elite more comfortable in opposition than in power, they also signal a larger struggle within the Republican Party. As the right begins to look beyond Donald Trump and contemplate the party’s future direction, they are engaged in a fierce debate about the inclusivity and scope of the conservative movement.
Consider two distinct clashes within the realm of conservative influencers. Following Kirk’s murder, Candace Owens, a prominent right-wing podcaster, propagated conspiracy theories regarding his death, implicating entities such as the French Foreign Legion, Egyptian aircraft, and Turning Point employees, among others. Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow and the new head of Turning Point, implored Owens to cease disseminating these falsehoods, but to no avail. Although Owens was absent from AmericaFest, her name was frequently mentioned. Ben Shapiro, a co-founder of the conservative media outlet The Daily Wire, stated, “Those who refuse to denounce Candace’s truly abhorrent attacks—and some of them are speaking here—are guilty of cowardice.” He specifically named Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly, two of the most influential podcast hosts within the MAGA sphere.
A second conflict also involves Carlson, who recently featured Nick Fuentes on his program. Fuentes is a white nationalist with admiration for Hitler, whom Kirk had long sought to marginalize within the conservative movement. However, Fuentes has gained prominence as the right, including Kirk, has adopted concepts like the “Great Replacement” theory, which posits that elites are orchestrating increased immigration to diminish the influence of white people. Shapiro’s address at AmericaFest condemned the inclination of Carlson and others to provide a platform for racists and allow conspiratorial thinking to proliferate. The internal disputes among influencers have spilled over into broader Republican politics. Numerous employees at the Heritage Foundation, a think tank, resigned after their leader defended Carlson’s interview with Fuentes.
J.D. Vance, considered a potential successor to Mr. Trump and a friend of Kirk, spoke at the conference on December 21st, following other speakers who had highlighted the existing divisions. The vice president appeared to suggest that the conservative movement could encompass…
